Hamlet

In order to celebrate Shakespeare's 450th birthday we are going to start the year reading Hamlet.

Try to get  an edition that is rich in explanatory notes (eg Longman Shakespeare, Cambridge School Shakespeare or many others)

As you read, you will make comments in the Goodreads group. Click on the link on the right-hand side menu to join (you will need an account, which is free).

If you have trouble finding a copy, you can start with Open Source Shakespeare .

  1. When I started reading Hamlet I realized that in this play there are many characteristics shared with the other Shakespeare’s play, Macbeth. In both plays there are apparitions. In Macbeth the three witches appear to Macbath and Banquo and in Hamlet the ghosts appear to Barnardo, Horatio and Marcellus. In Hamlet this characteristic can be clearly seen in Act 1, Scene 1, lines 27-29:
“With us to watch the minutes of this night,
That, if again this apparition come,
He may approve our eyes and speak to it”
